If you hope to get the most out of your strength training routine, it is important you are paying attention to the three “golden rules” along the way. While there are many ways to go about getting your body into great shape, when it comes to this particular type of workout, there are a few important points you need to focus on.
Let us take a closer look at three of the golden rules of strength training to ensure your program contains what will work for you…

1. Sufficient Progressive Overload.
First, it is essential you ensure your workout program is going to provide adequate progressive overload. Suitable progressive overload means whatever you were doing before today, is not as difficult as what you are doing today.
Being more difficult today might mean…
more weight is lifted,
more reps are performed,
more sets are completed, or
less rest is taken.
Something in your workout program needs to change to make the session more intense. This ensures you move forward.

2. Adequate Rest.
Next, also be sure you are getting adequate rest in whatever program you are choosing. Some people need only one day of rest per week while others may require two or three days to rest.
Listen to your body and give it however much rest it seems to need. Don’t push through sessions when you are tired. Learn when it is smarter to skip a day and work your program on the following day.

3. Good Variety.
Lastly, also consider how much variety you have in your program. When was the last time you introduced a new exercise? How often do you change-up the rep range? Has anything changed in your fitness program over the last few weeks or months?
As far as fitness goes, change is good. Change is necessary to see the best results, so do not shy away from bringing in some change. Relish it and you will see greater success.
While you do not need to do a complete overhaul of your fitness program every few weeks, it is a wise idea to switch around a few things at least once a month. Overhauling your fitness program will not only ensure progress but help to keep boredom at bay.
