Mystical magical mugwort is the herb of protection and psychic vision.
Artemisia vulgaris is sometimes known as common wormwood, felon herb, travelers herb, chrysanthemum weed and Sailors tobacco (used as a alternative to tobacco when supplies run low at sea) among others. Native to Europe, Asia, Africa and some parts of North America, this perennial plant grows one to two meters tall and is very hardy, some call it a weed.

Mugwort is one of the most popular medicinal herbs used in Japanese and Chinese medicine for a variety of health benefits, including colds, fever, flu, headache and bowel pain. The leaves and flowers are also used to flavor food, such as meat and fish, the Japanese use mugwort to make a variety of sweets. Before the use of hops, mugwort was the favored flavor ingredient for ( dried leaves ) beer.

Medicinal uses

Mugwort relieves insomnia, helps with sleep walking and ,if used as a tea, aids digestion. The herb is also known for healing the stomach dealing with diarrhea, colic and vomiting.A warning though – mugwort contains the toxin thujone which is dangerous taken in excessive amounts or over a long period (not to used by pregnant women). The dried leaves can be smoked for a relaxing, calming effect or to relieve pain.

A tea made from mugwort is especially beneficial for relaxing the uterus and aiding with late periods. A bath made with mugwort has amazing therapeutic benefits relieving rheumatism, aching limbs and tired muscles. Mugwort may also be used externally to heal wounds and burns. Mugwort is also a natural de-wormer for humans and animals.

Metaphysical uses

Mugwort releases its powerful healing properties through heat. Roll up a mugwort leaf, hold it over a flame until smoke appears, then begin to wave the herb over the body for purification of the spirit. Drinking tea of mugwort just before sleep will aid in the process of prophecy and lucid dreaming. Placing the dried herb inside your pillow will induce astral travel, lucid dreaming and pleasant dreams and also protects against nightmares.

Chop up dried mugwort leaves and flowers into fine pieces, place them on a heat proof bowl and set them alight.  Inhale the smoke for creative vision and heightening ones psychic awareness. Hang the plant in doorways for protection against disease and evil spirits. Some native American Indians used mugwort as a smudge stick to purify their spiritual and physical environments. Make a small sachet of mugwort and place it in the car for safe travel.
