It often starts as just a few sniffles or a scratchy throat.

But what you do in the next few hours and days can make a huge difference in whether that sniffle or scratchy throat turns into a full blown cold. Getting enough rest is extremely important as the body repairs itself during rest.

Next, drink some healthy liquid – water, herbal tea and infusions made of herbs and/or fruit or vegetables.

These infusions are popular nowadays – you can purchase an infuser ball with flow through vents. Add herbs like fresh mint, ginger, parsley, basil and slices of cucumber, lime, lemons, oranges, apples.

Experiment a bit with your favorite fruits and vegetables – these infused herbal waters will make drinking more water enjoyable.

Plus, the herbs can stimulate the immune system or digestive system to help the body ward of infections along with the Vitamin C in citrus fruits.

Drinking hot herbal teas may be more desirable when the weather is cooler and this help towards boosting the body’s healing abilities.

Be sure to cut back on the sugar as sugar can depress the immune system for up to four hours. Use only natural sweeteners or herbal the sweetener such as stevia.

Pile on the fresh produce at meals, eat healthy soups and cut back on deep fried and greasy foods. It’s also wise to cut back on alcoholic beverages and coffee.

Keep your chest and neck warm – wrap a warm scarf around the neck and ensure the chest is warmly covered.

Foot rubs and hot baths are also recommended when you start to feel run down.

In our fast paced society, we tend to keep stimulating the body when what you really need is to slow down and take care of yourself.

Ensure you have enough Vitamin C and herbal remedies on hand such as echinacea or oil of oregano.
