Design Ideas
How to design your herb garden in a way that benefits you.

Growing Herbs in Containers
Sometimes you want to grow a garden but just don’t have much space. This is where containers come in handy. You may wish to grow some herbs in containers even if you do have space. This works for several reasons. Some herbs are sensitive to climate and need to be taken in during the winter. Another reason is that you might have a sundeck or patio where you want to grow herbs in addition to your garden. It works well with certain culinary herbs. This way the herbs are close to the kitchen door for easy harvesting.

Culinary Herbs
This is about different culinary herbs and how to enjoy growing them. Culinary herbs are the most popular herbs to grow and are used the most often. It’s obvious why that is. Culinary herbs are the easiest ones to use and we’re more likely to use culinary herbs in our food.

Medicinal Herbs
This lesson is about the most popular medicinal herbs to grow, even if you never use them medicinally. Why? Because many medicinal herbs look great in the garden. However it's good to grow them and learn about their medicinal properties. Then you will have the raw material should you decide to make an herbal medicinal product, such as a salve.

Flowering and Fragrant Herbs
This topic is about the beauty of growing herbs for flowers and fragrance. Now we often think of most herbs as having an aroma, but what I am suggesting here is that these particular herbs have a fragrance that is most enjoyable and probably closer to perfume than the savory herbs like sage and oregano.

Shade Herbs
When we think of herbs, we usually think of plants that are in full sun. That is true for many herbs, which are Mediterranean in origin. We envision them thriving in the heat and intensity of a hot, sunny day. Yet there are some herbs that do better in the shade. Shade comes in a variety of degrees. It may changes from morning to mid-day to evening and it may also change during the seasons. There is light shade cast by trees, shady patches cast by the foliage of trees, bushes, ferny vines or manmade objects such as latticework trellises or ferny vines on fences.

Herbs for Groundcover and Rock Gardens
This topic is about the different herbs you can grow as a groundcover or for rock gardens. Now I might be repeating a few herbs from previous lessons, as many herbs have multiple purposes. However, it’s worth knowing about this category of herbs as they have their own kind of beauty and are useful for covering up areas with rough edges or large expanses of bare walls.

Weird and Wonderful Herbs
What is the weirdest plant you have ever grown? Would you like to grow a weird herb? Why? Or perhaps you prefer something wonderful? It’s interesting to grow something that makes people ask, “what is that?” Well get ready for something fun and different. These are herbs you can grow that will make people exclaim over the name or the look of the plant – or maybe a bit of both.
